Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. Her parents, however, didn't want her to take on acting roles until she was an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry says she didn't want to become an actor during highschool but decided to start acting as a social activity at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry made her debut with New York after graduation, performing in minor parts in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homesickness led to Perry return to California and pursue a career as a theater actress. The Other Place was performed by her and her mom on Broadway in 2013 Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie as well as Kevin McKidd. This was performed in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. She had a regular role in the ABC political drama Scandal, starring her dad. In the same year, she played a young model of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a youthful version. The character was chosen through an audition, even the fact that she had a deep association with it.
